Day 15

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist/circle/followers. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to.

Dear Fandom,

Thank you for making a space where we can grow together united by our passionate interest in something. Thank you for being a place where I can bring my whole self to the table.

Thank you for being a space where creative spontaneity happens. Thank you for being a place where I can color on the table and the walls.

Dear Ace Attorney Fandom,

Thank you for being a place where I can explore human needs and expressions and thank you for being mostly supportive and self-managed when things get blown out of the water.

Dear Welcome to Night Vale Fandom,

Thank you for being a place where creators are collaborating on all levels and enjoying their fans and being a fandom where I can embrace the imperfections of my craft and be myself.

Dear Orbiting Human Circus Fandom,

Thank you for your ability to dive into the complicated nature of things "being in your head" and yet still being "real"! You've taught me that virtual and mental space is just as important as the physical spaces.

Love,
[personal profile] dreamwriters

P.S. Cecil's fan letter poem, To The Creators (LJ) is also a love letter to fandom.

Day 14

In your own space, create your own challenge. Whatever your challenge is, and have fun with it!

Challenge Offered
Think of the fannish space you provide or want to provide. Do something to encourage that kind of space.

Some ideas but not an exhaustive list:
  • repost [livejournal.com profile] grayout's Fan/Fandom Creed

  • have a transparent comment policy

  • post a recurring fannish status post

  • post a recurring social post, fannish or otherwise

  • host a $fandom/multifandom friendzy

  • host a $fandom/multifandom creation or rec fest

Taking on my own challenge
[personal profile] dreamwriters
  • set up a comment policy

  • project update pool: a recurring social post about current projects and resource needs (I list my projects and what I need, other people can do the same in the comments. If there's someone who can fill a resource need, they can reply to comments. Resource needs being things like betas, topic experts, virtual tour guides, and street teams)

  • inspired by [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith's cuddle parties, a recurring virtual distance reiki clinic hosted as if it were a physical clinic

[personal profile] dreamwriteremmy
  • find people who want to actively engage in my private cheerleading filter

  • inspired by [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith's cuddle parties, make virtual slumber party a recurring social post

Day 12

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a podfic, an icon, a sketch, a meta, or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Cross stitch. Draft an essay about a particular medium. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of book you love, a ship manifesto, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Create something.

This is the AU I mentioned in the Day 6 post. It's forked off headcanon from my innerworld's Eva and Neil. This is their version of the To The Moon universe, this storyline jumps between this series and the Common House Tales series

Day 11

Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life.

The one fandom that I think changed my life the most is the one fandom i'm not really active in and got into late: Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy series, specifically Imriel's arc. It was the first time I'd ever found someone who explicitly wrote PTSD recovery fairly realistically in fiction. And basically ignited my love for disability/neurodiversity fic. I started reading and writing disability fic in other fandoms and original work because of Imriel. Because I wanted more of it and more varieties of it.

Day 10
In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples!

Cliché: Absence makes the heart grow fonder
Related to slowburn kink for me. Personally I can't do long distance relationships but I love reading them.

Trope: Odd Couple
I just love it when unlikely characters get paired together whether it's for a romantic relationship, a work relationship, or friendship fic

Narrative Kinks:
- damsel in defense/strong women
- bechdel pass
- fandom allusions and references
- AUs particularly canon divergence fix-its or fork-in-the-road AUs but AUs and fusions in general are fun
- Genderfic
- Acefic
- multishipping
- polyamory done right
-disability/neurodiversity fic
- competency
- domesticity
- nonsexual ageplay

Sexy Kinks
- slowburn
- BDSM done right
- voyeurism
- age differences
- oralplay
- sexual ageplay

Themes: love/hope

Message: family of choice, people need people

Day 8

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

I mentioned in the Day 6 post that To The Moon is one of my favorite small fandoms. To The Moon is an indie video game series by
Freebird Games that follows two doctors from Sigmund Corp a company that grants wishes to dying people. Here's the trailer for the first game.

I got introduced to the series by a fan in Ace Attorney fandom after they used a song from the soundtrack on their fanmix for one of my works and also said I'd probably like it because it has an autistic character. Later I learned it also hits my narrative kinks for odd couple partnerships and pop culture references.

Day 6

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

If you've already left feedback in the course of a previous challenge, it totally counts. But you're free to leave more feedback.

Mostly it's aww/like comments. And a lot of stuff from To The Moon (one of my favorite small fandoms) because I'm working on my own canon divergence headcanon AU.

My wishlist from 2015 still stands.

Additional wishes:

1. I musebox occasionally as Apollo from Ace Attorney in all his versions and desperately want more happy fanart I can icon because canon Apollo honestly doesn't smile much.

2. If anyone is familiar with Diane Duane's Young Wizards series I could use suggestions for a PB who would fit the description of the Esemeli incarnation of the Lone Power.

3. More people in Jim C. Hines's Magic Ex Libris fandom. I highly recommend this series to sci-fi/fantasy readers. I blathered a little about it for a fellow fan for the December Blogging Meme on my personal journal, if you need some more reasons for reading it.

4. I could use alpha and beta readers for both fanfic and original work.

Day 2

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

My favorite fannish memory from the past year was going to The Orbiting Human Circus Live Show in Boston in June. It was my first time at that particular venue and I spent part of the beginning texting a fellow OHC fan from out of state questioning the "stage and seating setup" (which the intro confirmed was on purpose; I also love how interactive most of the live shows I've been to are).

Day 1

In your own space, talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year?

I participated a few years ago. I enjoyed talking about my fannish past and wishes that time.

I decided to participate this year because:
(A) I'd like more fannish followers,
(B) it's neat to find out what other fannish stuff is out there (I always am on the look out for new-to-me fandom recs),
and (C) honestly I'm also looking for betas too (for both fanfic things and original fiction things).

Day 5

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. How did you come to fandom, why did you choose your fannish name, do you have more than one secret identity? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I honestly, don't really remember what my origin story is to be honest. When I was younger I didn't really keep track of my fandom involvement.

I think my first "true" fandoms where I was reading, writing and cosplaying things were Harry Potter and Redwall, though.

I have a lot of fannish identities spread around.

DreamWriter Emmy (my usually identity online nowadays) was spawned from the events of World Refugees a self-insert KH RPG that forked off that old Zombie Apocalypse meme since it was the name my self-insert character took on to align herself with the people she cared about who saw the world differently.

this account's current name Brides_Koneko (which i'm hoping to change eventually) is a mix of one of my oldest LJ username ladybrighid3333 (Bride is a nickname for Brighid) and my cosplay name Koneko which I used to use exclusively during anime conventions after one of my friends who is an anime fan gave all her friends japanese animal petnames.

Day Four

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

It doesn't have to be anything complex - it can be feedback for a fanwork or discussing something you might have in common or even simply admiring their icon. The point is to reach out to someone you normally wouldn't and connect with them, even if it's only for the briefest moment.

I went through some of the comments on the Day 1 and Day 4 posts and either (a) added a few people on tumblr or (b) subscribed to them on AO3. I also commented to the fic writers/artists who gave me gifts to my private account for fandom_stocking.

If anyone's playing catch up and wants to talk feel free to say something here too. My comment policy here is VERY low-key. I'll take even emoticon/one word comments! :)

Day 3

In your own space, talk about your creative process - from what inspires you to what motivates you to how you manage to break through blocks. Does your process change depending on the type of creating you're doing? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Fanfic
Varies. Music is a big inspiration, as is art. I also get inspiration from quotes, other books and movies. Sometimes I get ideas talking to other people in fandom. Sometimes another fandom does something that I want more of, so I write something using the trope/scenario in another fandom.

Common House Tales are actually things that happen in my system's innerworld so they're sort of fanfic personal narratives.

For me I write a lot of versions of fanfic and then I pick them apart later and quilt them together until I like them.

Most often my process is just little snippets of scenes that i quilt square together. Some fics do require more outlining, but that's not my typical preference.

If I get really frustrated with a block, sometimes I just post anyway and usually add a "might be edited later" tag (usually my personal standards are apparently higher than fandom's)... I mean I wrote Foreshadowed based off a really weak Welcome to Night Vale bunny post-episode 55 and I still hate it but at least some of the fandom BNFs disagree because I have kudos from some of them.

The other thing that helps a lot with blocks is sprinting. I'm a co-mod for All Year Sprints, a year-round writing sprints chatroom. Also if you're interested, I'm actually planning on running a Wednesday workshop on the 21st from 7-10pm EST called "Dusting Off The Quill" (it's going to be a mix of round-table discussions about making a writing habit and sprints using art for inspiration). :D

Fanmixing
I usually read the fic thoroughly. Sometimes talk to the author, especially if they also write meta about their universes. I sometimes ask the author if they have particular tastes in music, but grnerally I tend to use my own tastes which is pretty eclectic and go with the mood of the story.

Cosplay
For me, if I'm fascinated by/love a character, I'll probably try cosplaying them. I've been cosplaying since 3rd grade when my class did a Maniac Magee Book Breakfast (I was Maniac Magee -- unfortunately I don't have pictures of that cosplay or the ones I did after that of my interpretation of Cornflower from Redwall or my interpretation of Moaning Myrtle). Generally I do cosplay with found/bought stuff because I can't sew yet.

Day 2

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

01. Art for any of my fics (and yes, you can art Common House Tales if you REALLY want to. You will get access to more things if you're logged into AO3 since I member-lock some stories.)

Some photogenic scenes:

Way of Wishes: Little Apollo wrapping his arms around his adoptive family's merle border collie. Devon (an african american teen) holding up the blanket in Little Apollo's room and little Apollo panicked flailing in reaction. Lyra (an asian teen) clipping little Apollo's bangs up into little antenna and looking excited, Sarah presenting Apollo with his mother's bracelet. Thalassa putting Trucy's spare hat on her head when she comes out to tell the truth to Apollo and Trucy.

Patchwork Polyamory: A furious Franziska running her whip through her fingers behind a furious Daryan confronting Klavier, Apollo twirling Vera into his arms, Miles introducing Vera to Pess [the third] the chocolate Newfoundland he uses as a service dog, Godot and Iris cuddled up next to each other in bed while Lana's in the doorway with an amused expression holding a bag of burgers, Vera teaching a Franziska dressed in little girl play clothes how to finger paint, Machi giving Nick a piano lesson by chords, Klavier kneeling behind an overstimulated Apollo pressing his hands down on his shoulders while Apollo has his hands clenched in the grass of the lawn, Vera fast asleep in Apollo's lap with her head resting on his chest.

Not as Scary as You Think: An apprehensive Soma Cruz with his hand over the sapphire talisman around his neck under a torii gate while Mina gives him an encouraging smile.

Recovering: Hayate with his arm behind a scowling Sasame, helping him sit up properly, with an amused but still serious smile on his face.

Taking fate into her hands: Maureen scrawling out her letter from An Addendum to Intern Maureen's Living Will.

02. Icons/Art for my Welcome to Night Vale headcanons

Cecil: human manifestation is olive-skinned with roughly chin-length sandy brown hair usually chalk highlighted in shades of pink and purple. wears pastels mostly -- has a definite preference for shades of purple and pink. My interpretation of Cecil is a mix of eldritch Cecil (tentacles + a maneuverable shadow + the voice's remoteviewing capabilities) and fibro Cecil, so sometimes he has a wheelchair or a cane.

Carlos: My Carlos tends to be Afro-Latino, usually Afro-Peruvian or Afro-Puerto-Rican, though he has extended family in Mexico and Chile. He's also on the autistic spectrum. Clothingwise he gravitates toward either autumn plaids and science geek shirts.

Maureen: White girl with naturally brown hair. Tends to chalk highlight it in predominantly reds and oranges, but occasionally ventures into green/radioactive yellow-green. She tends to wear her hair either in a fake undercut (the faux undercut side is usually made with either a dutchback OR side french flat twists) OR in full "zombie" style curls. Clothingwise the closest outsider matches to her style are gothic punk and biker chic.

03. More readers.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This was really hard to pick just 3 self-recs because I tend to write serials. But if I didn't limit it, I'd probably rec half my AO3 account, which you can find in the sidebar.

Cuídame a belén (361 words) by dreamwriteremmy
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Carlos/Cecil Palmer
Characters: Carlos (Welcome to Night Vale), Cecil Palmer, The Sheriff's Secret Police, Doug (Welcome to Nightvale), The Masked Army (Welcome to Night Vale)
Additional Tags: Inspired by Music, Folk Music, Dancing, Folk Dancing, Home Videos, Love, Carlos is probably Puerto Rican in this Fic, Post-Episode: e051 Rumbling, might be canon-compliant, might not be canon compliant
Summary: Sometimes Cecil finds drinking to forget doesn't work, instead it does the exact OPPOSITE and he remembers. And on one of those days, Carlos manages to use his heritage to express the way he feels so close and yet so far from home.

One of my Carlos headcanons let me show you it (I have 2 different Carlos headcanon tracks and I've posted one fic for each track, but I like this fic better as a standalone than the other).

This is honestly one of my favorites from the past year, even though I quoted the song lyrics a bit off from the actual song.

An Addendum to Intern Maureen's Living Will (345 words) by dreamwriteremmy
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Carlos/Cecil Palmer
Characters: Intern Maureen (Welcome to Night Vale), Cecil Palmer, Carlos (Welcome to Night Vale), Dana Cardinal, Erika (Welcome to Night Vale), John Peters, Steve Carlsberg, Carlos' Team of Scientists (Welcome to Night Vale), The Sheriff's Secret Police
Additional Tags: fan speculation, Missing Scene, Letters, unsent letter, Epistolary, Post-Episode: e054: A Carnival Comes To Town
Series: Part 1 of Taking fate into her hands
Summary: [post-episode 54] Maureen writes an unsent letter to Cecil documenting her next self-imposed intern duty after storming off.

This is the first chronological part of a Welcome to Night Vale post-episode 54 AU written in very broken time segments in which Maureen decides to play unlikely hero.

Canon has kind-of jossed it due to (a) timing conflicts and (b) heavy implications of other alternatives to dealing with the long distance relationship in recent episodes, but I like this sandbox I created too much to stop playing in it. We can always say this is an alternate Night Vale timeloop or something ;)
