Summary: Jaden falls apart a bit when he returns home from therapy. Sandra is an awesome housemate.
Jaden comes home from therapy and sits down on the couch, hands in his hair. Sandra pokes her head in the parlor from the kitchen. She senses the quiet before the storm, the uneasiness clinging to him. "You okay, Jaden?"
"I don't know. Therapist says he thinks we'll be able to manage maybe for this week. He suggested I make a travel tactile grounding kit and see if that helps. But I can't think anymore right now. I almost wasn't sure I was going to make it home. Things started to go weird."
"The food just needs to slow cook now, so I can come sit with you. Can I put my hands on your shoulders?"
"Okay I think."
She rests her hands lightly on his shoulders standing behind the couch. She breathes. "Jaden, try to match my breath."
She feels him trembling under her hands, as he tries to take in a breath that matches hers but instead it tears loose a broken sob. The break in the clouds that unleashes the storm he's been trying to hold in.
"Jaden, can you talk through this with me?"
She feels his head shake without looking at him. "Okay. This is a safe space. You're allowed to let go. Let me hold onto the threads of the future. Be here now with me. You're safe. I'm here."
After some time, his sobs quiet down and she shifts swiping her arms off his shoulders and sits down next to him. "A little better?"
He nods.
"Did your therapist give you a list with ideas for your tactile anchor kit?"
Another nod.
She continues, "Do you want me to help now or do you want to rest and we can talk about your assignment after dinner?"
"Rest I think. I'm tired. What are you making for dinner?"
"Congee. Do you want to go to your room?"
Jaden shakes his head and grabs the throw blanket from the back of the couch, kicking off his shoes as he curls under it. "I'll rest here."
"Okay. I'm going to go get my computer. Be back in a minute."
When she returns he's got his eyes closed, resting. She sits down on the arm of the couch, doing coursework while keeping watch until the rice cooker in the kitchen beeps.
She carries a tray with two bowls and brings it into the parlor and gently wakes him up.
"Jaden. Food."
He smiles at her taking one of the bowls, "Thanks."
"Any time. You needed some rest."
